Mike Bishop’s proven leadership and diverse experiences have prepared him to represent Michigan’s Eighth Congressional District. The district includes all of Ingham County, Livingston County, and north Oakland County.
A lifelong resident of Oakland County, Mike has fought for families across the region. He currently serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee, and is a freshman member of the House Republican Steering Committee.
Mike previously served as Michigan’s Senate Majority Leader. While in the Senate, Mike sponsored legislation that improved the lives of children and families across Michigan, including the creation of the Michigan Child Protection Registry and the Michigan Identity Theft Protection Act. He also served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Mike also worked as Chief Legal Officer for International Bancard Corporation and taught at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Before government service, he was a private attorney representing families, small business and local governments.
Mike received his J.D. from the Michigan State University College of Law and earned his bachelor’s degree, with honors, from the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of Rochester Adams High School and is raising his three kids with his wife, Cristina, in Rochester, Mich.
With a voice likened to Jeff Buckley and technique that is the guitarist's envy, Elden Kelly has captivated audiences across the country with his virtuosic songwriting influenced by such diverse genres as jazz, neoclassicism, American Roots, Hindustani and Turkish music, Kelly proves impossible to pigeonhole. From bluegrass to ballads to fretless guitar, Kelly keeps it in the pocket - and he does it alone.
Kelly's solo act wants for nothing thanks for his skillful contrapuntal performance on guitar, which simulates the harmonies, lines and rhythms that often require a larger ensemble to create. his technique on the instrument is described by guitarist Joe Morris as "phenomenal," and it carries over into his experiments with the fretless guitar and Middle Eastern instruments he often incorporates into performances for color and timbral variety.
Originally from Vermont, Kelly graduated from Boston's prestigious New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation. In 2008, Elden accepted a full scholarship and teaching assistantship at Michigan State University with Rodney Whitaker, earning a graduate degree in Ethnomusicology in 2011.
There will be a Scotch Tasting event for the Haslett Okemos Rotary Club. It will be guided by District Governor Rick Briscoe at Dusty's Bordeaux Room, 1839 Grand River Avenue, Okemos on November 5th at 6:00 p.m. with heavy hors d'oeuvres. There is a 50 person limit, tickets are $100 per person.

OK, so there are three reasons why Lansing Rotary lunch is standing room only. The first is found one door down, a table laden with 4 entrées to make my Grandfather Luigi McGillicuddy proud; Chicken Alfredo, Spaghetti Bolognese , meaty Lasagna, and baked cod trans-fat. The second is the music and the third our amazing agenda. To wit:
12:29 PM Gonged into attention by President Lisa Smith who immediately yielded to Past President Beachler for a short invocation, a prelude to the stirring “America the beautiful” accompanied by flawlessly by Ed Culberson sung in our usual 112 part harmony. Introduction of guests was managed by Dave Trumpie admirably schlepping the electric baton to the many guests. Mike Rhodes presented the remembrance report with sufficient gravitas considering his message.
12: 43 PM President Smith offered a once in a lifetime investment: 2 tickets to the Big House for $200. We scalpers could retire, if only. Kirk Riley’s new member introductory was fun as he tried to back away from his maze and blue roots at the same time making it very clear he and his sons are someone you want on your team for any sport you can name as long as it is played outdoors.
12:55 PM Julie Pingston’s reminded us to keep bringing the books for distribution to charities till we get to 100 books and then we found out why the multicolored fliers were decorating our tables. The Haslet Okemos Rotary is hosting a “Scotch Tasting” November 5th at 6 PM at Dusty Cellars “guided “by District Governor Rick Briscoe . I guess that means back to your car after the event. Maureen Hirten’s History Timeline of the 60’s was a delight highlighting America’s radical course change in that turbulent decade with her gentile understated delivery.
1:05 PM Terry(2) introduced singer/composer Frances Bennigan and guitarist/composer Luke Wendle who treated us to an original “Heart shaped rainbow” and the popular “Little trip to heaven”
1:15 PM saw a love fest between our speaker Robert Trezise, President and CEO of the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) and his introducer, Jack Davis. Each using about the same amount of time. Leap, we were told, is an integral part of a growing, prospering, “New Lansing” providing seed money, encouragement and site selection for entrepreneurial generated employers. A born salesman, Mr. Trezise’s enthusiasm for LEAP was infectious. One can believe his organization had a hand in the expanding population (7700), 3500 Jobs created and the “non-traditional development” during the last decade. A 501, c 6 corporation his vision is “global” looking to annex the rest of the State and then who knows? He was preaching to the choir here at Rotary for sure. We wish us well.
