Biography for Satish Udpa
Satish Udpa is a University Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, former Acting President of Michigan State University, and former Dean of the College of Engineering and a former Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests span the broad area of materials characterization and nondestructive evaluation (NDE).

His work includes an extensive repertoire of forward models for simulating physical processes underlying several inspection techniques. Coupled with careful experimental work, such forward models can be used for designing new sensors, optimizing test conditions, estimating the probability of detection, assessing designs for inspectability and training inverse models for characterizing defects.

His expertise includes the development and design of novel transducers. Professor Udpa is currently serving as the Interim Director of Mobility and has an appointment in MSU’s Ecology, Evolution and Behavior Program.

Rotary International DEI Statement

A top priority for Rotary is growing and diversifying our membership to make sure we reflect the communities we serve and are inclusive of all cultures, experiences, and identities.

We're creating an organization that is more open and inclusive, fair to all, builds goodwill, and benefits our communities.

To help us achieve our goal, the RI Board of Directors passed a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statement:

As a global network that strives to build a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change, Rotary values diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds, regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Rotary will cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture in which people from underrepresented groups have greater opportunities to participate as members and leaders.
Editarian Report for October 27, 2022
President Millbrook invited everyone to join her for a social outing to the Lansing Brewing Company (LBC)--the second of these outings, and of more to come! Rotarians were greeted by Rotarian Barb Whitney and invited to enjoy the tasty vitals and libations prepared by LBC.

There was not a patriotic song, but there was the song of Rotarians catching up and enjoying a pre-Halloween festivity.

The 4-Way Test present in all of us and in banner, we met with guests from neighboring Rotary groups and those popping in to see what Rotary is all about. While guests were not formally introduced with a microphone, they were welcomed just fine over pizza and freshly-brewed beers.

The health of the club seemed just fine and no formal announcements were made, but we did hear about October birthdays from Brenda Geoghegan. Geoghegan reported that 70% of October birthdays contributed and they were asked, “Would you rather be scared in a haunted house or lost in a corn maze.” The Libra Rotarians were split on which they would prefer, but all (surely) celebrated Halloween!

Thanks to our Chair of the Month, David Trumpie.

NEXT WEEK: We will meet again in the Michigan Room and our speaker will be Satish Upda, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering who will give us MSU’s take on Autonomous Vehicles.
