Dr. Kulkarni is currently Professor and Director Emerita, Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders and former Division chief Pediatric and Adolescent Hematology/Oncology in the Dept. Pediatrics and Human Development Michigan State University (MSU). She graduated from Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad , India and completed a pediatric residency and peds heme onc fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. She was the Director and distinguished Hematology Consultant, Division of Blood Disorders, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta GA. She is widely published and is a founding member of the Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders (FWGBD), member of various professional societies and committees and boards, including the World Federation of Hemophilia Women with Inherited Bleeding disorder. In conjunction with Dr. Usha Reddy, she developed educational animations conceptualized AI art on Women and girls featuring “ see me-hear, me-believe me” and “Shemophilia” .
She has received numerous awards including the 2026 World Federation of Hemophilia Presidents award for global advocacy for Women and Girls with bleeding Disorders, nominated to the Michigan Women’s Hall of fame, Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society 2023, Lifetime Achievement Award, "Eternal Spirit” award from Coalition for Hemophilia B, “Fairy Godmother to women with Hemophilia” by the Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan, NHF’s “Physician of the Year” the MSU “Distinguished Faculty” award, and distinguished service awards from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC. In 2016, she was honored as one of the “Women Leaders in Hematology” in the American Journal of Hematology and in 2023 Women in Medicine by FWGBD.
