President Darwin called the meeting to order at 12:30. Bill Guerre gave George W. Bush’s sensitive inaugural prayer reminding us to “use our power to help people.” We sang an enthusiastic rendition of the National Anthem. Guests and visiting Rotarians were introduced to the club. Gabrielle Haskins delivered the microphone to speakers. We had new Rotary applicants, guests of Rotarians, and potential new members. (Past President Jack Davis gave one new member’s entire new member program. She will be a great addition.) There was a special “hello” to visiting Wayne Williams as he transitions from Traverse City to Florida. Carmen Turner reported the Health of the Club. Ron Seely had knee replacement surgery Monday and is doing well. George Nugent gave us the sad news that Ed Crouse’s wife, Patty, passed away in North Carolina, after a brief hospitalization, when the couple was on their way to Florida. The International Committee is accepting proposals for international project grants. The deadline is October 27. An invitation was on each table to attend a movie in Williamston that is a fundraiser for End Polio Now. Sunday, October 22nd at 2 pm. Several local clubs, including the Lansing Rotary are sponsoring this event. There was no Special Music due to the illness of the performer so we moved directly to our speaker of the day. Chair of the Day and of the Month Jeff Crippen introduced Dr. Jeffrey Crippen, Jr., Doctor of Chiropractic and Certified Traditional Naturopath who spoke on “The Fundamental Truths of Green Zone Wellness.” No. Not about medical marijuana, as some had surmised. He spoke about health and wellness. “Greenzone Wellness” is Jeff’s goal for everyone. He became interested in health from the time he was 6 years old and suffered with headaches and the traditional medical system did not have any answers. Jeff used visuals of a green, yellow, and red zones to illustrate that nutrition and health ranges from excellent to sickness. Medicine only treats symptoms. Full health – living with ease – means energy and fitness. Like planning a trip, you need to know what you want as a healthy life. After a series of questions to Rotarians and stories of Larry the Cable Guy, and Texas deep-fried Fruit Loops with marshmallows, we learned about giving a dying plant more or less water and more or less sun. You change the input to the plant. The same with us. Change the inputs. Stop the deep-fried Texas Fruit Loops. Dr. Crippen’s “Four Way Test of Food” is: 1.) Does it grow in the ground or have a mother? 2.) Is it a whole food? As it comes from nature? 3.) Is it adulterated (no chemicals, no pesticides, not genetically modified, not irradiated?) 4.) Is it local and fresh? Not “enriched?” While some might have inherited high blood pressure (3 -5%), most do not. Gaining just five pounds of fat adds 35 miles of blood vessels. Adding more distance the blood must be pumped. This requires more pressure. A positive attitude can add 7.6 years to a life. Low blood pressure can add 4 years. Low cholesterol – 4 years. Exercise can add 1 - 3 years. Emotional stress doubles the likelihood of heart disease and stroke. Optimists can live 20% longer than pessimists do. Eat healthily, with ease. Be positive. Focus on what is right. Decide to become healthier. In answering a number of questions, Dr. Crippen added to his advice. Yes. There can be positive stress. Working out or starting a new activity can be positive stress. The key is what mood level you are. Do the things that make you happy. Read the book, “Eat Right 4 Your Type.” We learned that Dr. Crippen’s childhood headaches improved with chiropractic adjustments but food supplements got rid of them completely. Be sure to keep that “Four Way Test of Food” in mind as you go through your life. Here is a link to Dr. Crippen's website which includes more info: http://letoliranch.com/ President Darwin thanked Dr. Crippen and presented him with a Rotary coin. He also told him that in lieu of a speaker’s gift we would donate money to Rotary’s Bio Sand Filter project to provide pure water to developing countries. Next week we will meet at the Lansing Center in the River Street Pub. Our speaker will be Amy Morris from the Potter Park Zoo. The meeting was adjourned. (Just a few minutes past 1:30) |
