If you have an international project that you would like to have considered for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, then submit your proposal for funding following the outline set forth below. We are looking for a one to two page narrative that responds to the outline, plus a project budget. Your total submission should not exceed three pages. Past President John Pence called us to order, a bit early as is the tradition on Loftus Day so that we can make our rounds. Dave O’Leary gave the invocation and eloquently equated our weekly Friday meetings to Thornton Wilder’s Long Christmas Dinner Play. The one act play covers 90 years of family Christmas dinners, acknowledging the passage of time by having the family members “exit stage right” while new members filter in. Our Friday luncheons include new members joining, old members departing and a periodic nod to these passages. It was the perfect analogy. We sang the Star Spangled Banner. Linda Lynch is not a doctor, but said the health of the club is good.
Club Historian Pat Hanes thought Frank Tegge’s technical malfunction (thankfully not a wardrobe malfunction) in presenting the 1940's left the club “wanting” so he presented the slideshow that eluded Frank’s technical grasp. As you can imagine, Lansing’s photographic history of the 40's included many memorable pics of Oldsmobile’s contribution to WWII, but also included invites for the 25 year club anniversary on June 27, 1941 and a post card showing how meeting make-ups were reported. Our Rotary Presidents were Wanger, Carrier, Wohlert, Milks. Tim Daman took the stage to give the club history for the 50's. Our post war speakers included a regular parade of MSU professors, and admonitions on the threat of communism. Lansing’s population was 92,129. In 1952 Lansing Rotary started the annual Christmas benefit party for the North School. We were also treated to home movies of The Abrams’ trip to Russia. Notable guests were Gerry Ford and Chuck Yeager. Club presidents included McDan, Foster and McGillicuddy. Familiar names all.
Irv Nichols told of the life and times of Bill Cochran, born in 1922 in Hancock, the gateway to the Keeweenaw, A chance encounter with Soapy Williams landed him a spot on the Mackinaw Bridge Authority. Like many of his generation, he wore many hats, including: car dealer, securities broker, public servant, docent. Bill passed away in 2015, but left a substantial bequest to the Lansing Rotary Foundation (North of $200,000).
John Pence dismissed the crowd to send us on our way to place flowers on the graves of our former lunch mates. His parting comments: “Have a great time at the cemetery.” Man that guy can turn a phrase.
