Editarian Report for September 8th, 2017
Once again mother nature smiled on living and dead Rotarians with a glorious Loftus Day filled with sunshine and Simpsons cartoonesque clouds. President Brewster called us to order and Rich Schaberg gave us an invocation fit for King David. We sang My Company Tis of Thee (you heard that right folks, America sold out to corporate interests). A single guest in the form of a future Rotarian was in attendance and the health of the club is fair to middlin’ with the only ailment being John Stevenson’s broken wing.

Jim Dixon honored Jack Ellsworth Bates as part of our Loftus Day program. Personal details: Born in 1926, graduated Eastern High School in 1944 followed by WWII Marine service. He was married in 1949 to the love of his life, Margaret, who was with us on Friday (every day he asked a simple question, “Have I told you today that I love you?”). He was called back to active duty for the Korean war and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was active in cheer and ROTC at MSU. Jack was Jim Dixon’s great Uncle.

Jack’s involvement with Rotary is the stuff of legends. He was a 43 year member and served as President of the Club, President of the Foundation and Club Secretary. Our Foundation’s endowment is named for Jack based on his contributions to Lansing Rotary. Jack’s personal involvement with our club’s relief efforts for the 2006 Tsunami introduced him to future Rotary President Ravi of Sri Lanka. That friendship led to President Ravi’s attendance at our 100 year celebration. The unofficial Godfather of Lansing Rotary, Jack lived the service above self motto and enjoyed a long life, probably because of his personal ethos, “Better to be seen than viewed.” President Brewster gave Margaret Bates a symbolic Rotary coin and the Club stood in silence while John Dale Smith played the all to familiar song we play for fallen Rotarians. We were dismissed with the ringing of the bell and the club divided up into teams to traipse about Lansing’s cemeteries and depositing flowers on the grave markers of our former Friday lunch mates.
