At last week’s recent Rotary Social at the Irish Pub, the festive met the enlightening. As members shuffled in, clad in their either their finest “business casual with a hint of 'I might know how to have fun’” and “ugly Christmas sweater meets mid-Michigan chic,” the meeting’s atmosphere quickly transformed from quiet Thursday night to mildly raucous with a taste of open-mic. It’s just too bad Lisa Smith wasn’t in attendance to blow the competition out of the water!
The first round of drinks came with an unexpected bonus: a deep discussion on the philosophical makeup of potato chips used as…(wait for it)…nachos! Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, the delicate balance between spreadable nacho cheese, sour cream and bacon is the perfect complement to homemade potato chips. Delish. And just like that, Rotarians reached a new intellectual high.
The evening wrapped-up (See what I did there? It is gift-giving season after all!) with surprisingly deep and incredibly heartfelt hugs, where everyone, possibly slightly tipsy, raised their glasses and declared, “Here’s to another year of service above self!” The crowd cheered, the pub erupted into spontaneous singing, and for those few magical hours, no conversation about business ethics or community development left the lips of those enjoying festive merriment.
