Volunteers Needed for Armistice Day Ceremony
The Michigan World War I Commission is holding a special ceremony at the Capitol on November 8th from noon to 1:00 p.m. to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I. The commission is looking for a few volunteers to ring bells at the event. One volunteer will have the honor of ringing the bell 21 times following the reading of a poem. This will be a solemn moment, following by a choir singing. Speakers will include the governor and other dignitaries, and posting and retiring of the colors by the American Legion. If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact Rotarian (from the Jackson club) Shelly Hendrick Kasprzycki at (517) 372-7770 by Thursday of this week. Her email address is skasprzycki@mihumanities.org.

Editarian Report for October 19th, 2018
President Dennis Fliehman called the meeting to order at 12:30 and John Collins led the assembled Rotarians in an invocation. Patriotic singing ensued, followed by introductions of the visiting Rotarians and guests, facilitated by Dave Trumpie. Diane Sanborn shared the health of the club is well.

President Fliehman noted the Nov. 2 deadline for International Grants and announced that on November 9th there will be a camera team on-site to video members willing to share their positive thoughts about Lansing Rotary as part of a membership & public image effort. Ken Beachler introduced the wonderful Brennan Hattawy (Eastern High School, Ferris State) who performed two selections.

Chair of the Month Paul Rathbun recruited President Fliehman to serve as Chair of the Day, knowing that new member presentations are among his very favorite meetings. The following four people traded the short version of their life’s story for a blue badge.

1. Mark Campbell: Category: “Consultant”
a. Born & raised in Toronto, married 35 years (to same woman), has 2 grown daughters who aren’t likely to move back in, and spend most of his career in the automotive industry before retiring 5 years ago.
b. Now much of his time is spent with divers and environmentalists around the “Teach a Man to Fish” endeavor, which is helping create artificial reefs (legally protected so they grow and mature), sustainable ocean farming via lobster farms and a land-based lobster hatchery.
i. He’ll soon be a published author; watch for upcoming editions of “Lobster News” (published in Australia) and bring him your copy to sign.

2. John Collins: Category “Consultant”
a. Born & raised in Oakland County, MI, he threw shotput and discus at MSU. His career took him away but his parents health brought him back to Michigan in 2011. He first attended Rotary as a speaker in March 2018, when he spoke about being a part of the 1996 Olympic Bombing investigation.
b. He shared more about his love of forensics (the Kennedy assassination fascinated him), and his new love of Rotary and all of us.

3. Bill Matson: Category: “Healthcare Seniors” (but he is also in consulting)
a. Born & raised in Sault Ste Marie; his college colors were blue & gold (Lake Superior State – no football team). He worked for Anheuser Busch (I feel like there should have been more about this in his speech) and was born with cataracts in both eyes.
b. He worked for Lutheran Services for past 33 years and moved back from Alaska a year ago to spend more time with his 3 kids (daughter & 2 sons).

4. Paul Traynor: Category “Attorney” (no consulting…except on legal issues)
a. He’s a Michigan Pioneer. It’s a long story, involving Dr. Edward Ingacias Donovan (his great grandpa), medicine for civilians/immigrants in North Dakota, and even a woman named Isabelle and her laundry business. There are more attorneys in his family than there are at most local law firms.
b. He’s a Univ of North Dakota grad, a US Marine Corps decorated combat veteran, and is from an Irish-Catholic Family. He worked for State Farm in Illinois, returned to North Dakota in 2007, and was recruited to Michigan 9 years ago to help with the merger of two companies that ultimately became Coverys. Today he’s in private practice, hoping to move to an in-house position with a suitable firm in Michigan.

At President Fliehman’s request for any other agenda items, Duane Vernon led the assembled Rotarians and guests in three rounds of “GO GREEN….GO WHITE” which was followed by a valiant but pretty quiet “Go Blue” from someone in the crowd who looked a lot like John Grettenberger, Sr.

Next week we will meet at the Lansing Center: Tim Daman will be our speaker.
